Answer
Baby food is a processed food and you cannot be assured that it is very fresh - think about how long those bottles sit on those shelves and how long the expiration date says that they are good for- that is not fresh. The normal human system can tolerate a lot more stuff that would kill a bird. Besides once a bottle of baby food is open - you are now going to keep a opened jar of food in your refrigerator for how long and only spoon out a spoonful a day for the bird- talk about really giving old food that is going bad quickly- most human babies finish off a bottle of food in 2 day( about how long you should only keep an opened jar of baby food) My microbiology teacher would be having a fit because even in a 40 degree refrigerator - microbes and bacteria is still growing- (that is why stuff in the back of the refrigerator look like gross science projects). Stick to fresh or go to a natural food store and get a stick or two of dried fruit like the sulfer free dried papaya and dice that up and give that in the winter time when all you get are apples from where ever or grapes.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-78978628001992901842014-05-28T23:02:00.001-07:002014-05-28T23:02:23.442-07:00What causes a baby rash?

How do babys get rashs?

Answer
Well, it can be for various reasons. One, staying in wet diaper too long. Especially if it is poo. Make sure to change diaper more often, if this is the case, and put lots of baby cream on baby's private parts. There are creams made especially to calm down diaper rash, for example,Boudreaux's Butt Paste. In other cases, to keep skin soft and protected, it would be good to use really moist baby cream, good one is Weleda calendula cream.
Two, it can be due to heat, baby is sweating and gets rash. In that case, you will take most of clothes from baby (some people leave baby only in diaper, I myself don't feel comfortable if baby is moving around house and rubbing it's gentle skin agains floors and carpets, no matter how clean they are).
Three, it can be some type of eczema. That is medical/health problem, caused by allergy to something baby got in touch with. For example, my second baby had eczema from the day one :(, because he was oversensitive to some proteins in formula (and every single formula has that type of proteins). In this case, baby can only wear 100% cotton clothes, his clothes should be washed seperately because you can not use fabric-softener, and it should be rinsed twice. Also, skin care products should be for sensitive skin, or even specifficaly, for problematic baby skin, it is mentioned in description of some of those products. For example, I tryed Dr Bronner's line, it was really good.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-3694590791064833452014-05-28T23:01:00.003-07:002014-05-28T23:01:37.188-07:00To Breastfeed or not to breasfeed???
Q. i am due in just about 9 weeks and i haven't decided whether to breast feed or give formula. with my first, i gave formula. and he turned out fine. my mom only breast fed me and my sisters for like 2 weeks, again, we are all very healty. i am going back to work, full time, 6 weeks after having the baby. a part of me wants too but a part of me thinks it'll be too difficult when i go back to work. plus i have a thyroid condition that i am on medication for. i also don't want to hear any negative remarks from the mother-in-law, again. last time, i was in so much pain after having him, i just couldn't do it. what do you think?

Answer
Formula is VERY expensive, breastfeeding can be a pain once in a while, more if you're not into doing it around other people- but it is healthier and soooo much cheaper :

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-50719024509967917572014-05-28T23:01:00.001-07:002014-05-28T23:01:07.740-07:00How old should you be to cut your own food?

I had my son May 15th and my hospital stay was extra long due to an infection that I had developed after giving birth. I was really sick and was off and on several different antibiotics. They said that due to the infection and antibiotics, that I couldn't breastfeed until at least 48-72 hours after my last dose of antibiotics. I didn't pump while I was in the hospital because I was soooo very sick, I just didn't have the energy to do it really. My question is, since I didn't pump and I haven't been breastfeeding this whole time, is it possible to still breastfeed my son? My milk has come in and it hasn't dried up yet...any advice or help would be nice. I've called the lactation consultant several times since I was released from the hospital Wednesday and I haven't received a call back yet. So I thought I'd try this site. Thanks!!

Answer
First off.....congrats on your new baby.

Second.....you may have gotten bad advice to start with as many antibiotics are safe to take while nursing. :-(

Third.....YES you can still try to nurse. Start putting baby to the breast and start trying to bring in your supply. Contact a Lactation Consultant and/or a La Leche League Leader for help. LLL will help for FREE and for your situation you might find a Leader who would visit you at home. (If the LC isn't returning your calls, have them put you through to the desk in the maternity unit of the hospital and find out her hours or have her paged! Or ask if there is a breastfeeding support group meeting at the hospital.)

Check out http://www.kellymom.com and look at the section on relactation.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-42765349827863760092014-05-28T23:00:00.001-07:002014-05-28T23:00:32.592-07:00When to start her on baby food?

I want to try and hold off on feeding my 4 month old baby food for awhile. I know she isnt supposed to have it til she is 6 months anyways, but I wanted to hold off a little longer. I also know she is able to eat cereal right now, but i want to wait awhile longer. Will this effect her growth, development, etc?
I am not saying i will not feed her anything, I just dont know if its ok to only feed her baby food, table food sometimes...not all the time. I dont know if she has to have it, or it can wait... I dont need rude answers. After all, YahooAnswers is for advice. AND this question isnt like I am trying to kill my child, or neglect her.
Like i just said, I am asking if its a problem to hold off. I am asking for advice, not criticizm. Jeesh, I feel like I am asking some horrible question.

Answer
Baby food is OK from 4 months, but no baby needs it so early. No, there will be no effect on growth or development if you leave it for a few weeks or even a few months. I started both my babies (now 13 yrs and 10 yrs) on one teaspoon per day at 6 months. They were still on one teaspoon at the age of 7 months. Foods given at this age are not for nutrition, which babies get from milk until the age of 1 year. Any foods are just to teach them how to eat and get them used to different tastes and textures. Some babies miss out some of the stages of weaning. For example, my younger child never accepted lumpy baby food but progressed happily from runny baby food to proper food. My friend's baby never had any baby food, and went straight to normal food, although I don't know what age he was.

Feel free to wait for quite some time if you want to, but if you leave it too long you might find that you miss the easiest time to persuade her to experiment with new tastes. So you should try to start by 8 months. You asked about table food. Don't give it too early, or there is a risk of choking. Wait until at least 11 months. And don't give gluten for the first year. If breast fed, don't give dairy products in the first year, but if formula fed this doesn't matter since she will already have been exposed to cows milk protein.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-53407084277596377582014-05-19T23:00:00.001-07:002014-05-19T23:00:16.344-07:00Baby led weaning and baby food?

I want to baby led wean but with baby led weaning I heard you are not supposed to start with pureed foods.

Diego seems very interested in food (he trys to take my food when I eat and eat it and he watches him eat and drink all the time)

Can I still start baby food and baby led wean?
he is 4 1/2 months

Answer
One of the parts of baby led weaning is allowing the baby to self-feed. You can not self-feed with commercially prepared pureed food. One of the points of baby led weaning is to skip commercially prepared foods and wait until your baby is ready for table foods. It is normal for babies to show interest when others eat or drink, but it is not the only indication a baby is ready for baby led weaning. Baby led weaning is not typically done with babies under 6 months and is more common with exclusively breast fed infants. We did a form of baby led weaning with our youngest. She was not quite 7 months old when we began offering her bites of food from our plates. At the time we had no idea there was even such a thing as baby led weaning, we simply decided that I would nurse her until she was showing interest in feeding herself. One of the things we did was cut her food into bite-sized pieces whereas it is more common for babies to be given a chunk of food to gnaw on. Instead, we allowed her to feed herself, but the pieces were small. We never gave her anything that had been pureed or mashed. If it was soft or could be cut into small pieces she ate it. If you use baby food than you are not doing baby led weaning. One of the things we also did was we rarely actually fed our daughter, she was the one who controlled everything she put in her mouth. The exception was foods such as oatmeal, yogurt, and applesauce. At first we helped her scoop these foods with a spoon, but never really spoon fed them to her. She held the spoon. It was messy, but that's what bibs are for plus we have 2 dogs who always were close by during meal/snack times.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-53801140977730658672014-05-01T23:00:00.001-07:002014-05-01T23:00:19.166-07:00Havnt breasfeed for 2 months?

You will be giving your son a wonderful gift!

The first FAQ on the link below gives much more detail, but in short you bring the baby to the breast frequently, pump (or hand express) in between to also stimulate milk production, and then use a nursing supplementer (such as Medela's Supplemental Nursing System) to feed the expressed milk through a tube at the breast while the baby is suckling. There are also herbs and medications that can increase milk supply.

Good luck!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-65155863091566317152014-04-29T23:00:00.001-07:002014-04-29T23:00:17.673-07:00anyone know why?
Q. my friend's breasts are engorged?
She is 25 & has had a couple kids already but couldn't be pregnant now because her husband has been fixed. lol.
Seriously though she is worried & she says they hurt really bad.
Hello,
I have a 11 week old baby and am confused about his sleep habit. I live in US and am currently on vacation in India. I came to India 10 days ago. While in the US my baby used to hardly sleep during the day....and even when he did sleep he was a very light sleeper.

Now in India he is sleeping like a log. I am not complainig but am confused. First I thought it's jet lag...India is 10 hours ahead of US...so practically day and night difference. But I feel that this isnt even jet lag....he sleeps for a stretch of 5-6 hours during the day and sometimes in such deep sleep that he wont wake up even if I try. Maybe its the change in weather? I calcuated the time he sleeps in India and it's not night in US...so he isnt sleeping his night sleep.

For the past 2-3 days he sleeps around 3.30 pm and wakes up around 9 pm. Although it's great....I feel that should I wake him up so he sleeps better at night? He did sleep once at night around 11 pm for 5 straight hours. I am confused.

Answer
Babies sleep patterns change drastically from the 8 week marker on. They start sleeping longer spells at a time, and deeper more productive sleep. They make up their own patterns, and if you dont help them set functional ones they'll continue on with whatever they decide. Such as sleeping all day and not at night.

With your situation theres also the added factor of a new environment and daily activities.

Just try switching his schedule around so he's sleeping more at night, and less during the day. Keep in in noisy bright places at day time ( he will need a few hours a couple times a day to take naps, or he will become over stiumlated and exhausted), and keep the lights dim and noise down at night.

It'll take a few days or weeks, but eventually it will even out.

Its really normal for his age, and expected for your circumstances.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-55063582695152830122014-04-26T23:00:00.001-07:002014-04-26T23:00:17.158-07:00Scared For the babys health!!?
Q. Hello, Im a 17 year old Pregnant teenager. I am about 37 1/2 weeks pregnant. I just found out that my partner has cheated on me. I think i may have an STD! The baby could come anytime now. Can you help please?
also i have painful sex like something is enlarged or seriously swollen inside me, really bad sore throat,, and itching irratation on the outside of the vagina. i wasnt worried i thought these could have been signs of pregnancy, until recentely my partner started to worry about having an std, i was tested but that was before he cheated on me,, he told me he only kissed this girl,, but i have proof that wasnt all,, so now im scared i dont want nothing to happen to the baby that is my main consern,,i dont know if im over reacting or what!?!
No im not still having sex with my partner.. i havent told him yet i just found out today that i kno he has had sex with another girl,, when he told me it was just a kiss,, BULLSHIT,, gosh it sucks being a teenager,, i dont have time to play these games he is playing,, me and him have been together for a year and half,,
Im scared and i dont know what i would say if i called the doctor,,, i mean what do i ask to speak to my doctor? well there are three doctors that i see.. its a group place,, i dont kno what to do or say???

Answer
It may be embarrassing or a bit creepy to have to have this conversation with a doctor or nurse face-to-face, especially since you don't have a relationship going with one person. Be as honest as possible - it's in your own best interest, and the best interest of your baby. Just tell them what you wrote here. Don't be afraid of seeming bad or foolish or anything else, you aren't the first patient of theirs to have a boyfriend cheat on her while she was pregnant.

Call your doctor and see if you can get your appointment moved to sooner. If nothing else, discussing your symptoms with him/her sooner will buy you some peace of mind.

Your symptoms could be related to the pregancy, but might be treatable anyway. (The itching can get really horrible and can be treated.) They will likely test you for STDs and you will have to wait for the results.

If you happen to go into labor before your results come back then be sure to tell your nurse and doctor about the STD chance at the hospital (or birthing center) so that they can work to minimize the exposure of your baby and take any precautions that they might need to keep your baby healthy.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-40812576656836134652014-04-15T23:00:00.001-07:002014-04-15T23:00:15.085-07:00Strange sleeping patterns of baby...please help.?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-14301534442577848762014-04-12T23:00:00.001-07:002014-04-12T23:00:19.634-07:00Baby Shower Games????

Answer
Your options may vary depending on where you live, so it’s hard to make a specific recommendation. If you don’t have any employer-sponsored health insurance options, you may be able to buy an individual health insurance plan just for your child (or for yourself and your child, if you need coverage too).

Talk to a licensed agent to find out what’s available in your area. You can also visit an online health insurance agency like the one I work for, eHealthInsurance.com. Through our site, for example, you can get free quotes, compare plans side by side, and apply for coverage online.

Individual health insurance plans may not be available for infants in every state, however. But you may also have some state-sponsored options available. I’d really recommend you talk with an agent to find out more. It doesn’t cost anything extra to work through an agent. If you’d like to talk with one of our agents, give us a call at 1-800-977-8860.

Hope that helps,

Amir M, licensed agent

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-73149206052302849462014-03-30T23:00:00.001-07:002014-03-30T23:00:22.729-07:00Fathers--Would you breasfeed your baby?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-55947112755629344282014-03-28T23:00:00.001-07:002014-03-28T23:00:16.294-07:00Songs with Baby in it?

No matter how I lay my 6-month-old baby down at night, he rolls over onto his stomach and sleeps face down in his crib. It's driving me crazy because I can't sleep at night. I'm so afraid he won't be able to breathe...If I could just get him to turn his head to the side, I would feel much better. Does anyone else's baby do this?

Answer
Babies sleep in the oddest positions; it's hard to believe that they could be comfortable!!

You can't really control how your baby positions himself at night, except by staying up all night and constantly moving him. In this case, *neither* of you will get much sleep!

Since he is 6 months old, he presumably has pretty good head control. If he were to have trouble breathing, he would just move his head! So suffocation is pretty low risk. (In fact, most babies have good enough head control when lying down *from birth* that it's not usually a problem unless there is heavy bedding that they don't have the strength to move.) And he's past the peak period for SIDS, too. (Most SIDS deaths occur with babies 2-4 months old, and by 6 months, the number drops still further.)

If you are really concerned, you could put him in your bed instead of in a crib. Adult mattresses aren't plastic, so they are more breathable, plus you'd be right there next to him to make sure he's okay. But I doubt there's a real problem.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-75756121551401082682014-03-10T23:00:00.001-07:002014-03-10T23:00:16.806-07:00is it wise to breasfeed twins?

My boyfriend and I are both very excited. Which also means there are excited grandparents in the picture as well. I really love and respect my boyfriends parents. My boyfriends mother has offered to babysit as well but there is one problem, both of my boyfriends parents are smokers. I really appreciate her offering to babysit but i feel like i should just find another daycare provider. I don't really like the idea of all of my sons things smelling like an ashtray at the end of the day. Or should i just try to talk to my boyfriend about it? I don't know what to do...I don't want to send the wrong message and have my boyfriends mother think im stuck up and unappreciative. help!

Answer
It seems as if you have a good relationship with the boyfriend's parents, any way of just talking to them about it, before the baby comes and babysitting is an issue? Some day during a visit there, ask them point blank, "Hey we were talking about it and I know its your house and you both smoke and smoking is your decision, I am just interested in whats going to happen when the baby comes? I obviously am concerned about my babies health and I know you two are as well, so I was just wanting to put aside my worries and ask you about your smoking with the baby being at your house?" Letting them know that this is a concern of yours without telling them "Hey I don't want you smoking around my kid!" It puts the ball in their court about it and makes them aware that yea we shouldn't be smoking with a baby in the house, maybe they will start smoking outside or going into the bedroom. I don't think asking someone to change their clothes is a reasonable request, it won't harm your baby, they won't smell wonderful but it is a free sitter. Expecting that they will not smoke in the house and that hands will be washed is not unreasonable, but changing clothes might be a little over the top.
My mom smokes and my fiance smokes, I would tell my mom point blank go wash your hands when I went to give the baby to her, I know she doesn't wash her hands after smoking if the baby wasn't there, so I wanted to let her know how we felt about that. My fiance goes outside, we live on the 3rd floor, he goes all the way outside, not on the porch (the smell comes in the door with him when he does this) so he can air out on his walk back up, I can't usually smell smoke on his clothes, I can smell it if he hasn't washed his hands.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-67990375460748687132014-02-23T23:00:00.001-08:002014-02-23T23:00:48.215-08:00just concerned over babys health?

no i wouldn't care less about myself... it's my baby i'm worried about.. its finding out on that day that you've harmed your baby just because you believed some old wives tales..... quitting poses no problems for me as i'm not a pothead... it's just plain guilt and worry

Answer
"While it is sensible to advise women to abstain from all drugs during pregnancy, the weight of current scientific evidence suggests that marijuana does not directly harm the human fetus."

http://www.mothering.com/articles/pregnancy_birth/birth_preparation/marijuana-side4.html

Relax. I read your other questions; no wonder you're feeling guilty and worried given some of the nasty, fact-free answers you got. My favourite was "your baby will be born addicted!" Oh, dear.

Keep in mind that there's nearly nothing you can ask about on here without getting "Oh no! That's terrible!" in response. People are horrible mothers-to-be if they have one beer a week, spend ten minutes in a hot tub, get a tan, eat sushi, etc, etc.

Making it nothing short of miraculous that anybody is healthy.

Speaking as a Canadian, I also think "Oh, but it's ILLEGAL!" is _absurd_. It is also a crummy rationale for condemning you for using it; consider what a jerk somebody would come off as if they similarly criticized a chemo patient who was toking. But, pregnant women are public property...

The evidence for light marijuana use causing problems seems ridiculously scant. I suspect the "never ever smoke a doobie! Ur baby will die!" comes from a largely theoretical risk. It would, of course, stand to reason that THC-free smoke is a bad idea, but you'd have to be smoking quite a bit to need to really worry about that.

Anyway, I'm sure you've done a lot of reading, but -- keep in mind that an awful lot of what you read might've been garbage; few people are willing to tell pregnant women "Yeah, living a normal life might be okay" just in case it isn't; the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting," for example, is big on warning against everything, rather strongly, with very little science behind it -- yet it's a 'pregnancy bible' for a lot of frightened women.

"I spent hour after hour poring over library books that contained references to medical marijuana and marijuana in pregnancy. Most of what I found was either a reference to the legal or political status of marijuana in medicine, or medical references that simply said that doctors discourage the use of any “recreational drug” during pregnancy. This was before I discovered the Internet, so my resources were limited. The little I could find that described the actual effects on a fetus of a mother’s smoking cannabis claimed that there was little to no detectable effect, but, as this area was relatively unstudied, it would be unethical to call it “safe.” I later discovered that midwives had safely used marijuana in pregnancy and birth for thousands of years. Old doctors’ tales to the contrary, this herb was far safer than any of the pharmaceuticals prescribed for me by my doctors to treat the same condition. I confidently continued my use of marijuana, knowing that, among all options available to me, it was the safest, wisest choice."

http://www.mothering.com/articles/pregnancy_birth/birth_preparation/marijuana.html

"Old doctors' tales" indeed. Pills are "safe" because they've been studied -- or so people think; qv Thalidomide.

Re. leukemia:

"At this time, there is no corroborative evidence to link marijuana with cancer." -- loads more details on that at
http://www.mothering.com/articles/pregnancy_birth/birth_preparation/marijuana-side4.html

Pay attention to what shows up when people actually make an effort to study the risk, not just blather on about theoreticals (from the same page):

"Since 1978, psychologist Peter Fried and his colleagues have collected longitudinal data on prenatal marijuana exposure as part of the Ottawa Prenatal Prospective Study (OPPS). Over the years, these researchers have administered hundreds of tests to the same group of children, assessing their physical development, psychomotor ability, emotional and psychological adjustment, cognitive functioning, intellectual capacity, and behavior.

Out of all the OPPS studies and all the tests given, researchers have found very few differences between marijuana-exposed and nonexposed children."

Finally:

http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/hemp/medical/can-babies.htm

"Participants. Twenty-four Jamaican neonates exposed to marijuana prenatally and 20 nonexposed neonates.

Measurements and main results. Exposed and nonexposed neonates were compared at 3 days and 1 month old, using the Brazelton Neonatal Assessment Scale, including supplementary items to capture possible subtle effects. There were no significant differences between exposed and nonexposed neonates on day 3. At 1 month, the exposed neonates showed better physiological stability and required less examiner facilitation to reach organized states. The neonates of heavy-marijuana-using mothers had better scores on autonomic stability, quality of alertness, irritability, and self-regulation and were judged to be more rewarding for caregivers."

The stuff certainly looks safer, and more useful, than a lot of the 'pregnancy category C' drugs still routinely used in pregnancy despite being poorly studied. It's all but impossible to find reliable information on the effects of my particular asthma inhaler on pregnancy outcomes, but nobody gives me a hard time about using it. Which is safer, daily inhalation of a relatively untested chemical that does have a little link to cleft palates in animal studies, or occasional use of a herb I'm sure pregnant women have been using for ages? Your call.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1630440801925671208.post-52802635568045793682014-02-22T23:02:00.001-08:002014-02-22T23:02:15.157-08:00health insurance for baby?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381572906503768743noreply@blogger.com0
